Comments: G'day Dennis,
Absolutely brilliant site with such a wealth of information. Your transcriptions have certainly helped me knock down a few walls in my tree. I was wondering if you could have a look in the records for a Stephen Hobbs c1740 in Mells Somerset. He had 3 children Stephen Jr c1760 in Mells, George c1761 in Kilmersdon, and Ann c1765 in Kilmersdon.
I am also after any info on Henry Cuff c1773 in Doulting. He married a Mary Hill born c1775. Any info pertaining to this line of Cuffs would be much appreciated.
Once again thank you and congratulations on a brilliant site.
Cheers
Alex

Comments: Thank you Dennis for a wonderful site. Now that I've had time to read most of the Porch Time line I can appreciate what you have done.
My husband Michael is a direct male descendant of George and Hester Porch(i've traced this via census returns so am pretty sure it's correct) We're hoping that our son James will continue with the Porch line as most of the Porch males in this area have had daughters. He's getting married in August so he's oe step nearer to it !
I have been in contact with a gentleman living in your area who has provided me with more info. on the Porches, but this doesn't match up with any of your info pre Joseph and Sarah Hicks.
He has stated that Joseph was the son of Joseph and Margaret Coole(could this be Cole?) married April 11 1700. And this Joseph was the son of Joseph and Mary Shippe married April 22nd 1667 at Wellow.
Are you able to confirm any of this?
Thanks for your help
Best wishes

Are you aware of ant bastardy records within the parishes, please?

Comments:  Very good site, very clear information, can you please tell me why there are some blank boxes on where surnames should appear, are these records not complete are they so unclear they can['t] be transcribed?  I am no way criticising it just happens they are the surnames I'm looking for Dallimore marrying a Horler also when do you envisage the further years to be transcribed.
Response:
Without precise references to the Parish; Register; Page and Entry numbers, I have no way of checking why there are blank boxes.  If they have the word “[Blank]” in them, than that means what it says - no information was given.  If there is some information which I cannot transcribe, I usually say so in the “Notes” column.
As for when I envisage further years being transcribed, I am transcribing daily, but each register really does take a long time, especially when anything unusual occurs.  Then they have to be independently checked; sorted and web pages built to accommodate all the information.  On top of this, links from one page to another have to be organised.  I hope that answers your question.

Comments:  I am researching the Penny's from Somerset, The last name in my tree is Robert Penny who Married Ann Horler on 21st Sept 1795, Someone on Roots said you may know how to find Roberts birth c 1763/4 or his death, which I have no idea on.  If you have any pointers for me please reply to the email address above, Thank you
Chris
Response:
Without knowing where the marriage took place, it would be hard for me to know where to start looking.  Remember, the groom is often from another parish, and sometimes even from another county.  How people meet and fall in love cannot be predicted.
My advice to you and anyone else is to start by searching the IGI (but don't take that as gospel).  You could also search Ancestry.com, but whatever you do, ALWAYS keep a note of where you obtained your information, including any page and entry numbers, so that you can go back to the exact position again later.

Comments: An interesting site. I am researching the Hyatt line in Sherborne around 16/17c.
I have found strong links with one of your listed Hyatt lines.
Edward Hyatt Shepton Mallet 1625 was, I believe, my 7x great grandfather. I have records and several other trees than my own that verify this.
I was wondering if we could share some information?
To be honest, I am housebound and use the internet mainly for research. I am actually looking for the Hyatt line that moved from Edward 1625 in Shepton Mallet to Sherborne in the late 17c. These Hyatt's then became taverners, turning to the Dissenting Methodist religion around 1790 and moving back to Frome to be ordained a preacher at the Zion Chapel there, then on to the London Tabernacle at Tottenham.
Any help would be appreciated, as would I give any help I could from my own research.
Thank you.

I'll have to try & get the parish records for Leigh upon Mendip to try & verify but it's the best lead I have had so far.
Our James Cabbell lived in Frome & married Ann Plummer born 1793 so thanks to you I have her line too.

fantastic. Have been doing my own research for well over 20 years now, so know how much work must
have gone into it. Don't like to pinch other peoples hard work but must admit it's great to double check
what I have or look for the odd entry I have missed. Well done. One point I would like to mention is
regarding Frederick Swift, son of William & Bertha (nee Treasure), born 1874 Green Parlour, bap.
14/6/1874 Writhlington. He was quite important in his time. A miners agent from 1917 to 1945. In
1919 he became the first labour Alderman for the County of Somerset.  Don't know if you are aware
but he was awarded an M.B.E in 1945 for his work into silicosis, due to him miners were given
compensation for the disease. He is buried in the old churchyard at Writhlington. Unfortunately much
over grown when I last visited.

Comments: A wonderful website! Your transcriptions have opened up a whole new generation of my
mother's ancestors - Padfields.  I believe Thomas and Mary Padfield were the parents of my 3x great-
grandfather, Isaac Padfield, born in 1798 in Babington.  What is the significance, please, of the `X' in
the Notes column of the baptism transcription?  It appears alongside four of the six children born to
Thomas and Mary between 1787 and 1803.
Kind regards.

Response:
I'm afraid I don't know the significance of what the "X" is.  Perhaps it was to remind the vicar/rector to pay
the parents a visit.  They may not have been regular church-goers.

Comments: Hello, I'm contacting you from Canada where I am trying to research information on my
father Reginald Edward Horler. My father died in 1959 in Calgary at age 50. My understanding was he
was born in “Somerset, England”  He had a sister Gertrude. His mother was Lucy (her maiden name
was Millard). I can't find a record of my grandfather Horler's first name.
I am currently 58 years old (born Dec 23/49).Having just retired I am interested in trying to track down
more information on my “family tree” and would like to visit the area in the Uk where my family came
from before emigrating to Canada sometime during the early 20th century.
Can you be of my assistance?  And thanks for reading my comments.
Joe Horler
Response:
Its difficult to start a research without knowing the parish where your ancestor was born, and my Timelines
only cover a couple of dozen of them.
However, I did feed his name into a search engine: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl and found that
Reginald Edward was born in the Frome, Som. area (Frome 5c 371). This is the reference you would need if you
want too send for a copy of his Birth Certificate, which would give you his parents names.
I then tried to find a marriage for him anywhere in the uk. It would seem that he didn't get married here.
Hope that helps.

Can you help or is their someone else who is researching this line

If you look at my Timelines for “White”, you will find the names of William's parents [1878].  When I get some
spare time, I'll look for the children in the Parish Registers.  But of course, they may not be there.  You could

Comments: My great grandfather was Thomas Henry Coles, son of James Coles c1832, Somerset, UK.
He had at least 2 wives, a son James and daughter Julia, as well. There may have been more children
from his last wife Caroline. T.H.Coles married a Jane Beck from Battersea. Do these people fit any-
where in your research. I have only been able to trace my ancesters back as far as James. He moved
from Somerset to Battersea some time around 1867
Response:
Don't forget to look at both Coles and Cole.  Both names are listed separately in my Timelines.
Remember that in the past there was no set way to spell a word, so it depended on the writer to decide how to
spell it.  Plus, it also depended on people's accents and how the writer heard the word being said.
My Timelines are only from a small area of Somerset.  If you don't find anything there, your ancestors
probably came from another area.
